Why Colombia?
After those jokes with Cocaine, I'm always getting the question: Why Colombia? I answered it so many times, I could write it down like a memorised text at school. But this time I'll try to give a more detailed picture.
I believe everybody has that desire, exploring the unknown. This is what takes me as far as Bogotá at the moment. In my case it started when I was a little child. I couldn't even read when I was looking at maps all day long. When I learned at school how to divide and multiply I already knew all the capitals of all the countries. However at this time I didn't have the thought that one day I would want to live in another country, not even travelling.
As a high school senior I got new perspectives. Finally I was able to use a foreign language and it was around that time when I discovered reading. Although I prefer reading novels, I was always looking for stories that are taking place in different countries. On the other hand, thanks to my language knowledge I had the opportunity to look for foreign people on the internet. I loved to talk to them and learn about their countries.
The next huge step was my Erasmus semester. I always knew that I would use this scholarship, but due to my struggle at my university this time came pretty soon. I had to escape somehow. Thankfully my semester in Dresden fulfilled all my expectations.
I continued my studies with fresh energy and I got many friends from all over the world. I think at that time I already knew that I couldn't stay in Hungary. I knew that I have to live in another country for some time.
Until now I was only talking about the reasons why I want to leave Hungary. So there was a list of more than 200 countries in front of me. Somehow I had to choose one. Europe is too close. Small islands would be boring. Culture of Arabic countries is too strange for me. Although Africa seems exciting, there are too many natural, political and cultural problems. Canada, Australia and New-Zealand are just too good. I don't need the dictator of China, Russia or Turkey. Japanese aren't welcoming foreigners. The USA is just a big no. Although Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines are countries I'd like to live in. In the end Latin America won, because I know some spanish. And from all these Latin American countries why Colombia? Because nature is amazing. The people are nice. The culture is special. And there was born my favourite writer: Gabriel García Márquez. And I love the way he was writing about life in Colombia.
