The Rainbow Mountain

When you pick up a travel book about Peru you’ll find on the cover either Machu Picchu or the Rainbow Mountain. Having different layers of rocks in a mountain isn’t unique. There are hundreds of similar places around the world, but somehow this one has a special set of colours and forms that attracts thousands of tourists.

The place is only a couple of hours away from Cusco. I think the best way to get here is by guided tours. It costs only around 70 Soles with meals included. The bus will take you very close to the mountain. You only have to walk 3-4 km which is of course still quite a challenge considering that the altitude is nearly 5000 m.

Doing it on your own by renting a car might make sense if you wanna avoid the flood of tourists who are arriving with the tours more or less at the same time between 11am and 2pm.
