Price control
This water shortage is an excellent example of how perfct the idea of the price cap is. Of course, the problem is much more complex, but it is similair to the supply problem experienced in the case of fuel.
The problem in both cases is that the low price does not encourage users to save. While it would be in Hungary's interest to reduce consumption according to all existing aspects, we prefer to give fuel at half price.
Global warming? War in Ukraine? Russian dependency? Air pollution? Unlivable cities? Who cares?! The point is that the voters feel that our Hero, Viktor Orban defended us.
So we happily snort cheap fuel, further heating our environment and speeding up the greenhouse effect, while we do not understand why it is already so suffocatingly hot in June. Our grandparents only had to go through one or two days of heat like this per year, but we get through it on average for a whole week.
But that's not a problem, there is cooling in the car, right?. Why would anybody get on the tram at all? My back would be sweaty because of the weak air conditioning. Clearly the Germans don't understand anything: they give a stupid 9 Euro, national, monthly pass for public transport. Are they stupid? People want to drive. They need cheap gasoline, not a sustainable, environmentally friendly alternative. What are they even thinking?
So we thought it was scorching hot, so we turn on the air conditioner and the sprinkler at home, so that our beautiful green lawn doesn't burn out. Only then, for some reason, the water does not come. We are cursing and argue with the customer service lady. For some reason it doesn't occur to us that there is no water because we watered the grass and filled the pool all week, and of course the neighbors and everyone did the same. And it certanly never occurs to us that maybe there is no water, because when we decided to move to the agglomeration to have a nice grassy garden, with a pool, two dogs and a cat, 100s of other families have decided the same and that's when the government also decided that the price of water has to be frozen. Making it impossible for the water company to manage capacity expansion on their own in addition to the most important maintenance works.
There is enough water in Hungary, but not in unlimited quantities and we don't know for how long. We should appreciate this treasure much more. It is clearly not normal that we are watering the lawn with potable water and it isn't even considered luxury. Of course, if we don't pay the real price for something, then we pay for it in some other way. In the current example, with water shortage.
